WALT: use a thesaurus to find synonyms and to add more impact and interest to our writing.

Aunt Skeeter and the bad itch!
(Old Version)

It was a very hot day at the Bluebell farm. Aunt Skeeter had been working in the garden since daybreak. She looked up at the hot sun and wished she were swimming in the cool creek down the road. All at once a good idea came to her mind. She decided a swim was just what she needed. She ran down to the creek and jumped right in! A smile spread across Aunt Skeeter’s face as she floated on the water. However, her nice swim didn’t last for long. All of a sudden, Aunt Skeeter let out a cry that could be heard in the next county. She jumped up out of the water like she had been shot from cannon. She wiggled and squirmed as she tried to find the source of her discomfort. After one big shake a fat catfish came flopping out of Aunt Skeeter’s overalls. Seeing the catfish made Aunt Skeeter laugh so hard that she had the hiccups for two days!!

Aunt Skeeter and the dreadful itch!
(New Improved Version)

It was an extremely hot day at the Bluebell farm. Aunt Skeeter had been slaving away in the garden since daybreak. She looked up at the scorching sun and wished she were swimming in the crisp creek down the road. All at once an amazing idea came to her mind. She decided a swim was just what she needed. She sprinted down to the creek and bounded right in! A smile spread across Aunt Skeeter’s face as she floated on the water. However, her relaxing swim didn’t last for long. All of a sudden, Aunt Skeeter let out a yelp that could be heard in the next county. She flopped up out of the water like she had been shot from cannon. She wiggled and squirmed as she tried to discover the source of her discomfort. After one huge shake a plump catfish came flopping out of Aunt Skeeter’s overalls. Seeing the catfish made Aunt Skeeter giggled so hard that she had the hiccups for two days!!

WALT: add language “magic words” to our writing to describe and to add impact and interest to our writing.

We are experimenting with “show and NOT tell” language.
Here are some of our favourite descriptive language.

It was a sunny day.
The landscape was bathed in golden sun light.
The brightness was so intense that no-one could see.

The icecream was good.
The ice-cream tasted like a million lollies in my mouth all at once.
Every bit of the ice-cream melted into my taste buds.

The boy was angry.
His face was erupting with furry.
His fist was clinched, his knuckles were white.

The boy ran.
The boy flew like a super hero across the street.
The boy thundered past with only dust left in his tracks.

He made cheese.
The boy screamed as he spotted a mouse invading his yellow creation.
The smile on his face as finally sculpted his yellow surprise.

The teacher was fed up.
Her eyes were red with anger and frustration.

His nose was blocked.
His nose was filled with indescribable green slush.
His nose was so full of green pudding that he was having trouble inhaling oxygen.
An ocean of green sludge bursted from his nose, Ewwwwwww!!!!

It was cold.
It was bone shattering cold, ice covered the windows so thickly that no-one could see out.

The cat was black.
The cat was as dark as it was during witching hour.  His eyes were small glints piercing every dark corner.
The cat evaporated into the dark void of the night.

She was hungry.
Her tummy grumbled, it was a pool of hot mud ready to begin its dance.

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

I have a good sense of humour, love to have fun and hope to do a lot of fun activities this year! I also like making other people laugh  because it fills me with joy.

By MITCH

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

Lastly, throughout the year I could teach the class lots of sports like Ripstiking and soccer        because I am good and enjoy both of these sports. In class I could teach maths because I am most talented at that subject.
MATT!

Secondly, I like to believe that learning is important for everyone because they can get more information. One of the things that I love to do is R.E because I enjoy learning about God and much more. Some other things  that I enjoy doing are Writing, Reading, PE and Gymnastics. The most favourite thing that I want to teach the class is making hand puppets, so I am really excited. My goals are to try to be on time everyday and to try to be the best that I can be.

Secondly, I believe learning is important for everyone because it gives you new information. Some of the things I am good at are reading, writing, maths and swimming. I am most talented at dancing. I go to danceworks every week to learn hip hop. When I am doing my work I am always focussed and most times I finish all my work on time.

From Teghan

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

First of all, I love Maths and Physical Education. This is because maths is very statistical and I like that. I like P.E because it has got lots of action and speed. In my own time I enjoy playing rugby in the winter for Marist because it’s a contact sport which makes it fun. Another interest I like is cricket.
Joshua

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

First of all, I like P.E art, I.C.T. and maths. I like art because
I love to paint with bright colours. I also like sport but mostly
I like P.E skills because teachers teach you fun games. Another interests is I.C.T because I like to teach people things on the computer like bubble.us. My most favourite thing to do is maths because I like to add numbers and multiply numbers together.
By Anna

Secondly, I am really good at focusing on my work and I don’t get involved in chats when working. I am good at Swimming, Rugby and Soccer. At Swimming time, I like floating on my back and tummy. I am realy good at kicking and freestyle when I swim.

Graylin

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

I always try to reach my highest potential. I show Self control, Unity, Perseverance, Enthusiasm and Respect.
I put my hand up when I want to speak, I work with others nicely, I do not give up when times are hard, I say “yay” during all the fun activities and I keep my hands and feet to myself and do not touch other peoples property.

Cameron

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class

Thirdly, I have a funny and mischievous personality so no matter how grumpy you get at me for being naughty, I’ll always be happy. This year I have a few goals such as learning my times tables which I’m sure you will be able to help me with. My values this year are care for everyone and treat others as I want to be treated because last year I think I was mean to a few people. This year I could teach the class dance and some tricks on a bar or some wood wind musical instruments.

Leo

Why MissGray is lucky to have me in her class

Firstly, I love maths and P.E. I love maths because it makes me feel like my mum, and I want to grow up and be good at maths like her.

P.E is my favourite subject at school because you can run around and get fit. My favourite sports game that I have played at school is capture the flag and I can’t wait to play it with you.
Hadley

Why Miss Gray is lucky to have me in her class.

First of all, I love reading, writing, maths, dancing, art, netball, and cooking. Reading forms my ideas for stories, because I fill up my diaries with half-written stories and ideas. I hope one day they will get published, but we will probably be watching T.V holograms and talking to aliens, that the people won’t take very much notice when a story gets published. Maths is fun when you get it, but otherwise not so much. I’m hoping we learn codes this year for one of my stories! Dancing and netball are my all-time favourite sports because they’re fun, exciting and easy to learn. Art and cooking fill up my spare time. I feel relaxed when I’m creating art because I let my ideas fall onto paper and brighten up its whiteness. I can see we both will have very much in common.
By Anna

Why Miss gray is lucky to have me in her class.

First of all, I love writing, reading, maths and spelling. I love to do these subjects because I do them all the time. If we do P.E, I would like to play netball because I think it’s a cool sport. Not many people like homework but I love it (most of the time). I’ve herd that not many people like homework because it’s boring but I find it fun and enjoyable!

Why you are lucky to have me as your teacher letter.

Tuesday 8 February 2011

Dear 2011 Room 2 Students

I am writing you this letter to inform you all of how lucky you are to have me as your teacher this year.

First of all, I love art and physical education and I can’t wait to rub off my enthusiasm for theses subjects, onto you all.   I hope to do lots of art with you as well as teach you a lot of sporting skills and games.  I also enjoy integrating computers in the classroom and look forward to teaching you all new computer skills.  We will have a class blog where you will record your learning, (Yr 6 students will continue using their individual blog from last year).  You will learn lots of computer skills and will learn how to record your learning in lots of creative ways.

Secondly, I like Room 2 to be a place where learning is fun and exciting.  This means ensuring I provide you all with exciting learning experiences that are challenging and fun.   This includes lots of creative activities and cooperative activities.

Thirdly, I want to promote creativity in you all and ensure that you all become the best you can be.  Sometimes I will ask you to rework your work to improve it, this is because I want to challenge you all and want to ensure you all push yourselves to strive for personal success.  I want to help you all develop self belief and confidence so that you all become responsible for your own learning and become inspired about learning.

I am a considerate and fair teacher who will always make the time to listen to you.   I am a strict teacher because I always ensure each and every student has the right to learn and is not being distracted from learning by others.  I do this by ensuring I, as well as all my students, follow the St James’ behaviour management system and are following all  SUPER achiever values.

I am really excited about our year of learning and I know it will be a successful year full of new learning and discoveries.  You should feel very lucky to have me as your teacher!  You all will be very surprised and proud at what you will achieve this year.

Yours sincerely
Miss Gray
